Bio
Bernice K. Klaben, PhD is a licensed speech-language pathologist and associate professor for the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and associate director for the UC Voice and Swallowing Center. She has been an adjunct instructor at the College of Allied Health Sciences in the Communication Science Department since 2007. Prior to coming to Cincinnati, Dr. Klaben was the director of clinical practice at The Blaine Block Institute for Voice Analysis and Rehabilitation in Dayton, Ohio for sixteen years.
Dr. Klaben received her undergraduate, masters and doctorate of philosophy from The Ohio State University and completed her clinical fellowship in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at The Ohio State University. While at OSU she was a graduate administrative assistant in the Dean’s office and served as a teaching associate and clinical supervisor in the Department of Speech and Hearing.
Her specialty is in the areas of voice, dysphagia and head and neck cancer at the UC Voice and Swallowing Center, providing full assessments and rehabilitation services. She serves on a multidisciplinary team at the UC Health Barrett Cancer Institute, providing therapy to patients with voice disorders and rehabilitating voices of patients suffering from head and neck cancer treatments. Dr. Klaben has treated patients diagnosed with paradoxical vocal cord dysfunction, especially in high performing athletes.
Dr. Klaben is co-author of a leading voice textbook, Clinical Voice Pathology: Theory and Management (4th ed), and has authored text chapters and participated in clinical research. She has given numerous presentations and seminars in the area of voice and swallowing and has trained and supervised a number of student interns and fellows.
Dr. Klaben is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and has served on the Special Interest Division in Voice. She is board-recognized in swallowing and swallowing disorders. During her career she has traveled to Saudi Arabia and taught a six-week voice disorders course to speech-language pathologists at the Jeddah Institute for Speech and Hearing. She continues to teach an elective course in total laryngectomy for the Communication Science Department at University of Cincinnati.
A continued goal of Dr. Klaben’s is to provide Cincinnati and the tri-state area with the utmost excellence of care in the area of voice and swallowing. She provides services at the UC Health Barrett Center and in West Chester.
